Before Prophecy of the White Witch[]
Not much is known about Durzel's early life or his parentage. But what is known is that in 961, at the age of 29, he visited Ortega, who was living in seclusion in Ragpick village. There, Ortega served as a teacher to him, teaching him many things about life, duty, and battle. Ortega trusted Durzel enough to eventually give him the legendary sword, Esperancer. Three years later, he was appointed as the court prosecutor of Poltia.
Several years later, in 971, he was ordered to track down the white witch Gueld and arrest her. He followed her path and learned about her many prophecy. Finally, he confronted her, but had a change of heart and decided to join her on her pilgrimage. However, Gueld was killed in 972 by Revas XIV. He watched her die, and was unable to stop it because of the assassin's magic.
Afterwards, he decides to give up Esperancer, due to his failure as a knight. He stabs it into the ground in front of Gueld's tomb. He goes back to the capital and takes his position as Master Swordsman. However, the plans of Isabelle and Lebas are in progress, and in 989, he was confined to the tower of Dorofus.
During The Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch[]
He is first mentioned by Lodi to Jurio and Chris, who respects Durzel as a master swordsman and wishes to learn from him. Durzel is then mentioned directly at the end of Chapter 5. Denken of Oldos mobilized all his monks and told Julio and Chris that Phlothia Castle seemed to be the cause of the dark clouds, but since it was impossible to determine the current situation, they should first meet Durzel, who was imprisoned in Dorofus. In Chapter 6, he is mentionaed again by Uncle Huck. Huck tells them that Durzel's granddaughter is in Arisa, Joanna, Jurio and Chris meet Joanna, and she informs them that Durzel is waiting for those who made the pilgrimage to the five Shrines with a silver dagger. They decide to infiltrate the tower, and rescue him.
Jurio and the others find Durzel at the top of the tower. Durzel escapes with Jurio and Chris and the others through a secret passage, saying that he actually designed the Tower of Dorofus. Afterwards, he guides the group to Geuld's Grave and shares Gueld's last days, how to stop Raual's Waves, and the condition of Phlothia's Castle.
In Phlothia, the party contacts Brit, who is still loyal to Durzel. With his help, the infiltrate the Castle and confront Revas, defeating him in battle. They then climb up Isabelle's Tower, hoping to confront her and stop Raual's Wave. They defeat her, stopping the waves and with Gueld's help, neutralize the waves entirely, saving both worlds. Unfortunately, Gueld has to give her soul to prevent, fading into absolute nothingness.
In the Epilogue, Esperansar is handed over to Jurio, and Durzel trains with Lodi. However, Esperancer is broken in the battle, and Durzel wonders if this is an ominous omen, or a good one meaning the blade is no longer needed. Durzel writes a final letter to Jurio and Chris, commending them as great heroes and young adults. He is proud of who they are and who they will become.
